The technical specifications to consider when buying a TV

          With technology advancing more and more high definition has become a real standard, offering better and cheaper TVs. But what is the difference between the different types of televisions on the market? What you should know before buying a new TV?

          As time passes, the language and the strange words that describe the characteristics of the TVs become increasingly complex. Here is a list of common terms and their explanation.

(Ratio) Contrast is usually indicated by two numbers separated by two points (one split), for example 1:1 or 10,000:1. Indicates how much difference there is between the lighter color and darker color that the screen is able to reproduce. The greater the difference between two numbers, the greater the contrast.

Frequency (update): Indicates how often the TV "rewrite" (or "update") the image. The videos are a sequence of many images, called "frames" which are reproduced on the screen several times in sequence, depending on how fast the image. For example, during a football match, each frame will be played fewer times in a second because players move faster. In contrast, during a game of chess, each frame will appear several times in a second because the movements are slow. The refresh rate is expressed in Hz, or cycles per second.

The higher the refresh rate of a screen, the better the image quality, especially those on the move, the images are clear, crisp and smoothly. Plasma screens have a high refresh rate (usually 600 Hz), while the LCD or LED screens have refresh rates of 50, 60, 120, 240 and some even 480 Hz

Response time (pixel) is similar to the refresh rate, but the number of milliseconds that a single pixel takes to "react" to a new state. While the refresh rate has to do with the time it takes the TV itself to refresh the image, the response time is the time it takes for a pixel to change color (from white to black, or red, or green, etc.). The less time spent, the better the TV. A better response time produce less blur and sharper images.

CRT stands for "Cathode Ray Tube", or "cathode ray tube". It is the oldest type of screen used in televisions and computer screens of old. To the detriment of the excellent image quality, CRT monitors are no longer bought or sold because they are large, heavy and bulky.

LCD stands for "Liquid Crystal Display", or "liquid crystal display. It is the most common screen used for displays in computers, TVs, watches, calculators, appliances, and so on. Compared to CRT, the LCD consumes less electricity.

LED stands for "Light Emitting Diode", meaning "light-emitting diode". LED TVs are the latest generation of televisions, and especially in this period, turning into a desert.

Plasma: Plasma screens use the same technology used in fluorescent lamps for domestic lighting (lamps popularly called "energy saving") to illuminate the screen. Plasma televisions have dominated the market for some time before being "overtaken" by those LED.

Rear Projection (RPTV) are real film with a large screen projectors that provide integrated high-resolution images. The whole is contained in a kind of TV.

(Video) Composite: Indicates that the TV has a yellow RCA jack for connection to other devices that support composite video, a transmission system at low resolution and not ideal for HD TV.

Component Video (or component) is the transmission system that divides the signal into three different signals and allows transmission of high-definition signals.HDMI stands for "High-Definition Multimedia Interface", or "high-definition multimedia interface". It is the current standard for transmitting high-definition digital audio and video. Now all TVs have at least one HDMI port. This standard is a candidate to become the replacement for SCART (which is not capable of transmitting digital signals).

DVI stands for "Digital Visual Interface", or "digital visual interface." It is the counterpart of HDMI in PCs. A brief is intended to be replaced dall'HDMI.
